Southern Coastal Region

Like a long tail, Tanintharry coastal region is southern most part of Myanmar and narrowly stretches out about 670 miles. Because the shortage of plain land and valley between the mountain range to the east and vast sea to the west, there are limited cities and the region itself seem to be apart from mainland of Myanmar. Nevertheless, natural resources and beautiful scenery are, in no doubt, really attractive and lucrative in their own ways. The regions is collectively known as Tanintharry Division while Myeik (Mergui formerly) is the capital. A number of islands are actually enjoyable on marine life and bio diversities, collection of bird’s nest, breeding of pearl together with the simple life style of Salon people, best known as the sea gypsy.

Dawei

Known as Tavoy in colonial period, it is one of the major towns and business centers for the respective region. Bestowed upon the ruined ancient city structures; just like Thargara, Mokehti and Waide, together with some archaeological finds; such as coins and votive tablets, the town and environs should be assumed an impressive historical zone but almost all the religious buildings in and around the town are most possibly not so old. As an advantage, it is practically enriched with mineral resources and beautiful plantations. Lying at the strategic location, there is an international seaport under constructed, in presence.

Mokehti Pagoda

Next to the recreation centers, gardens and monumental buildings, it is a Buddhist monument located in the triple brick enclosure walls of ancient city under the same name.

Maung Ma Gan Beach

Because of unaccessibility, it is least known, may be completely not known, but the silver white sandy beach measured about 5 miles a long and 500 yard wide, would really refreshing in unspoiled nature. It is only 13 miles away.

Myeik

It is the capital lied something around the center of stripe land. In early 17th century, it was known as Mergui under the stronghold of Mr. White. One thing should be noted that the town is set half on the slope of natural mountain well covered with ever green forest and half on the narrow plain. The wooden house of bird’s nest is a must visiting site of the city and the late residence of Mr. White then tombstone of his wife would be curious tracing for new comers. For the last decade, it has become the stopover and major gateway for archipelago comprised by over 800 islands in various sizes and shapes. Some of larger islands are really good for scuba diving, snorkeling, canoeing and marine studies so on.

Tanintharry Forest Reserve

It is located some way form the city and one of last few natural habitats for wild tiger all over the world. Regarding to the speculative statement by WWF, there may be a reasonable number of endangered species; like tapir, bear and monkey so on.

Kaw Thaung

It is the southern tip of Myanmar and border town to Thailand. Beautiful modern mansions, pagodas, rest houses are harmoniously erected on mountain slope and stripe plain while the harbors are fully decked with numerous ships, boats, and marine vessels so on. A vast number of plantations on palm oil, rubber and cashew nut as well as orchards of durian, pomelo, pineapple, rambutan could be enjoyed.

Cape of Bayintnaung

At the center of an area of about 10 acres, there is a gigantic and live statue on an artificial base. That is the historic king of Bayintnaung and founder of Second Myanmar Empire. With the beautiful landscape and colorful flowers, it is now the view point of the town.

Salon Island

It is a common visiting site in Kaw Thaung and a picnic by small boat. Enjoying on beautiful fishes and boundless sea, it should be visited.

Maliwan Waterfall

It is about 22 miles away and could be accessed through the plantations, small villages and woodlands. It is actually flowing down step after step naturally.

The Beach

About 10 miles away from town Center, there is a bay in beautiful crescent shape. Because of sandy shore and clear blue water, it has become a popular beach for the dwellers and visitors of the town.
